UWONET Stands with the World: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2024
00:00 November 25, 2024 to 23:59 December 10, 2023

The Uganda Women's Network (UWONET) joins the global community in commemorating the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, running from November 25th to December 10th, 2024. This annual campaign provides a vital platform to raise awareness, galvanize action, and advocate for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

This year's global theme, "Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls," holds special significance as we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This landmark agreement set forth a comprehensive agenda for achieving gender equality and empowering women. Yet, despite progress in some areas, violence against women and girls persists at alarming rates.

The Shadow Pandemic:

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing inequalities and led to a surge in cases of domestic violence, highlighting the urgent need for increased investment in prevention and support services. In Uganda, the situation is particularly dire, with deeply entrenched patriarchal norms and discriminatory practices fueling gender-based violence.

UWONET's Commitment:

UWONET remains steadfast in its commitment to ending gender-based violence in Uganda. During the 16 Days of Activism and beyond, we will:

  • Amplify the voices of survivors: We will provide a safe space for women to share their stories and advocate for their rights.
  • Demand accountability: We will engage with government and other stakeholders to ensure that laws and policies are effectively implemented to protect women and girls.
  • Promote community engagement: We will work with grassroots organizations and community leaders to challenge harmful social norms and promote gender equality.
  • Empower women: We will continue to provide training and support to women, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and their communities.

Join the Movement:

We invite all Ugandans to join us in this critical campaign. Here's how you can participate:

  • Wear orange: Orange is the symbolic color of the 16 Days campaign. Wear it to show your solidarity.
  • Speak out: Challenge harmful attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate violence against women and girls.
  • Support survivors: Listen to and believe survivors. Offer them your support and encourage them to seek help.
  • Educate yourself: Learn about the root causes of gender-based violence and the impact it has on individuals and communities.
  • Donate: Support organizations like UWONET that are working to end gender-based violence.

Together, we can create a Uganda where all women and girls are free from violence and can live their lives with dignity and respect.
