Following on from recognition that women’s rights were often marginalized in the context of human rights, a regional instrument, the Protocol on the Rights of Women was derived from the African Charter on Human Rights and Peoples Rights (The Charter) adopted in 1981.
The African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights is a human rights instrument specifically designed to respond to ‘African concerns, traditions and conditions’.
