The Domestic Relations Bill (DRB) now the Marriage and Divorce Bill has a relatively long history that dates back to 1953 during which period, the Government of Uganda, has been trying together with different  stakeholders like the women’s movement to enact a just family law.

The need to develop a unifying and comprehensive law on domestic relations was based on principles of non- discrimination and gender equality. Uganda, as part of the International community is also a signatory to a number of regional and International Human rights instruments, which instruments charge state parties to enact fair, equitable and just domestic relations legal systems among other key equity issues.
