Empowering a New Generation of Confident, Courageous and Transformational Leaders
Young women are not merely the leaders of tomorrow, they are already shaping conversations, influencing communities, and driving change today. Across Uganda, UWONET is investing in young women’s leadership by creating platforms where their voices are heard, their ideas are valued, and their potential is nurtured.
Building Confidence, Skills and Voice
Young women are not waiting for the future to arrive. They are already speaking, organizing, advocating and participating in the spaces that shape their communities. Yet many continue to encounter financial barriers, harmful gender norms, limited mentorship, online harassment and stereotypes that question their ability to lead. UWONET’s response during the quarter combined evidencе, skills development, mentorship and platforms for participation.
Understanding the Barriers
A national study on young women’s participation in leadership and decision-making was conducted by UWONET to examine public perceptions, opportunities and barriers affecting young women’s engagement. The research provides evidence for future advocacy and programming while ensuring that young women’s experiences remain central to conversations about leadership.
Finding Their Voice
Public speaking, speech competitions and leadership dialogues were organized to give young women opportunities to practice communication, analyze public issues and engage with questions of democracy and gender equality. For many, the experience was about more than acquiring a skill. It was about discovering the confidence to use their voice.
Leadership in the Digital Age
Young women also strengthened their understanding of digital advocacy, responsible online engagement, personal branding and strategic communication. They explored how digital platforms can support advocacy, community mobilisation and positive narratives about women’s leadership while also considering how to navigate online harassment and misinformation.
Universities as Leadership Spaces
Partnerships with Uganda Christian University, Kyambogo University, Makerere University and IUIU created opportunities for young women to connect with experienced leaders, engage in dialogue and explore leadership within their institutions and communities.
Through our investment in young women’s leadership, we are nurturing a generation of confident, courageous and transformational leaders who are actively contributing to positive change in their communities. By strengthening their skills, amplifying their voices and creating opportunities for meaningful participation, UWONET is helping young women challenge barriers, influence decisions and shape a more inclusive society. These efforts reaffirm that young women are not simply preparing to lead in the future; they are leading today, inspiring others and driving the change needed to build a more just and gender-equal Uganda.
